The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is recruiting for the position of Director of the King Khalid Wildlife Research Centre (KKWRC) in Saudi Arabia. ZSL have been managing KKWRC for the Saudi Wildlife Authority (SWA) since 1989. The centre runs the largest captive breeding programmes in the world for mountain gazelles, Arabian sand gazelles and Nubian ibex, and carries out ecological, epidemiological and genetic research on these captive animals and wild populations in protected areas across Saudi Arabia. KKWRC has carried out reintroductions into three protected areas in Saudi Arabia and continues to monitor these populations whilst planning future reintroductions.

ZSL is seeking a suitably qualified, motivated individual with strong leadership qualities. Candidates should have experience at Senior Departmental level and preferably experience working in the Arabian Peninsula. Able to work independently in demanding social conditions you will have an aptitude for motivating staff and fostering relationships with institutional partners. A good understanding of conservation, wildlife health or animal management is desirable. Fluent spoken and written English is essential and Arabic is of benefit.

As Director, you will be overall-in-charge of the centre, responsible through ZSL to the President of the Saudi Wildlife Authority in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. You will be responsible for the management of KKWRC staff, finances and other resources to ensure the delivery of all management, scientific and capacity building targets in the SWA-ZSL annual contract and workplan.

The position is initially a fixed term contract with the possibility of renewal each year thereafter. The post will be based at KKWRC in Thumamah, 1 hour outside of Riyadh. Accommodation is provided at KKWRC. The salary range is £37,984-£48,020 (tax free) commensurate with experience, with 45 calendar days leave per annum.

Reporting Structure:
The post holder will report directly to the West and North Africa Programme Manager.

Location:
The position will be based at KKWRC in Thumamah, 1 hour outside of Riyadh.

Duration:
The initial contract will be until the end of 2013 and renewable on an annual basis.

Salary:
£37,984-£48,020 (tax free) per annum commensurate with experience.

Overall purpose of job:

Project Outline:

Main responsibilities:


Execution of the ZSL contracts and workplans in Saudi Arabia.

 Communication with the Saudi Wildlife Authority and ZSL.

 Direction and management of the Human and other Resources of KKWRC specifically provided for under the ZSL contract towards completion of the scientific, management and capacity building targets set out in the work plan and contract.

 Responsibility for management of the budget and oversight of the finances provided under the contract, and ensuring completion of financial reports, annual audits, and filing of tax returns.

 Preparation of annual workplans and budgets.

 Preparation of monthly accomplishments reports, quarterly summary reports and comprehensive annual report on all KKWRC activities and submission to SWA and ZSL.

 Overseeing all publications arising from scientific research at the KKWRC.

 Representing KKWRC at appropriate national and international Meetings.

 Carrying out other duties as required for the effective execution of the contract between the Zoological Society of London and the Saudi Wildlife Authority.


Other duties:


1. To undertake appropriate administrative tasks;

2. To comply with the relevant ZSL and KKWRC policies;

3. To maintain safe workplace practice and procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation, ZSL Health and Safety guidelines and any relevant Saudi Arabian legal requirements;

4. Any other duties commensurate with the post as agreed with line manager.
